FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?
Your will be asked to complete a consultation form so it would be a good idea to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your appointment. Your therapist will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, any particular problem areas, any specific medical conditions, allergies etc in order to evaluate and decide which massage will be best for your needs and oil to use. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. Your massage therapist may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.
2. What do I wear during the massage?
Depending on the treatment, you may or may not need to undress. For a full body massage, most people undress, except for underwear. Your therapist will give you privacy to undress and you will be covered with towels throughout your massage except for the area being worked on.
3. How long will a full body massage treatment last?
A full body massage treatment will definitely need 60 minutes or 90 minutes if it is a deep tissue. A 30 minute appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, i.e neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. Many people prefer a 60 or 90 minute session for optimal relaxation. Deep tissue massage usually require 90 minutes because it is a slow massage. The pressure is built up slowly otherwise the muscles will not relax. The therapist will also carry out certain stretches before going deep into the muscles and trigger point therapy (applying pressure to knotted areas for a certain amount of time) may also be carried out. Always allow relaxation time prior to and after the session. Your muscles can take up to 3 or 4 days to recover after a deep tissue massage!
4. How often do I need to get a massage?
The frequency of massage therapy treatments varies from client to client. For general stress reduction it is recommended that you have regular sessions ranging from once a week or once every 3 weeks. For people with high stress levels at work or at home, once a week is usually the norm. For people with very tight muscles, it is recommended to have regular sessions once a week or at least every two weeks. As with any holistic treatment, regular sessions are necessary to keep the body in optimum condition.
